MUSHclient: for an accessible, stable and powerful MUDding experience
4. SAPI 5: primary speech Plugin5. Further MUSHclient Resources6. On the power of notepads
As I’ve said before, the support from the MUSHclient community is outstanding. Even so, there are issues as blind users that are specialised to us, where you might want the input of another blind MUDder rather than help in general. For that, please feel free to comment here (your e-mail address isn’t published) and if I can’t help you, perhaps some other reader will stumble upon your message and reply to it.
If you’re looking for other resources, though, the following is a useful (if not exhaustive) list:
- The MUSHclient Web Page
- Is MUSHclient’s official home page: many of the below links are available from here.
- The MUSHclient Downloads Page
- Lets you get the latest version of MUSHclient. The plugins here seem to work fine with MUSHclient version 4.40. A version considerably earlier may not work without the Plugins being modified, one much later mayn’t work well either (and means I haven’t kept up).
- The MUSHclient Documentation page
- Provides an online version of the MUSHclient help file. I’m not sure which is more up-to-date but the current version of the help file is an old-style HLP document, so this may be easier to navigate.
- The MUSHclient Forum
- Is the ultimate resource for questions about MUSHclient. I strongly advise you use the “search” feature before posting there.
- MUD Lists
- is a page created by MUSHclient’s author, detailing a list of MUD games, client resources etc.
- The AllInAccess MUSHClient Resources page
- Is run by another screen reader user, and may have some additional or alternative resources to this page.
If you have resources not listed here that you think may benefit other screen reader users, please feel free to tell me about them: you can either put a link in a comment (which I will publish here), or send a comment and request I keep it private (in which case I will add commentary to the site detailing whatever you have).
MUSHclient is, I firmly believe, the best client for use without resorting to a product designed specifically for the blind or visually-impaired. Whilst I feel that products for the blind have their own place, I believe that we should use mainstream products wherever possible (assuming they don’t degrade our performance). the topic isn’t one for debate on this page, but my beliefs on this matter perhaps influence my strong support for MUSHclient.
In any event, you should of course make up your own mind as to the software you use. This page is just one place where you can modify MUSHclient to make it that much more accessible for your needs. I wish you every success in the MUDding world - if I can assist you in any way on your travels, please get in touch.

in mush client if you set a trigger for * and put the output to tts_stop /n then you can have a VERY functional reader for MUDS without using a screenreader like jaws or even nvda…however because you will sometimes miss a tell from friends etc. while playing like this, it is important to have a channel history (standard) so you can replay messages sent by friends.etc.
So to clarify what I am saying is that the TTS_sapi plugin works fine alone, ive been playing mushs like this for awhile now…but you need that trigger to make the output non-spammy. Make sure you set the output to command though and NOT world…or the trigger will crash the client with spammed commands. Also only the first 3 checkboxes should be checked, leave the others all blank.
I am currently (after completing the simple * trigger) in the process of making/discovering a trigger than now eliminates all the silly characters you dont need read like brackets and vertical lines…please look forward to these fully functional mush 4.51 clients with TTS plugins for full functionality MUDS without the use of ANY screenreader (and still plays less spammy than them anyways)…also now working with Dragon to get muds into the abilities of those who cannot type for various reasons.
Have a good One!!!
PS the trigger doesnt work yet on any input from the num-pad, but this also will be solved soon!
